Part love song, part howl, part incantation, Inbetweenland is the first book-length collection of Jacks McNamara s poems, prose, and hybrid experiments in the neon vernacular of being alive. Mapping out radical trajectories through loss, violence, and queer desire, McNamara creates a luminous archive of survival and resilience in a self-destructing world. A visual artist as well as a writer, the author relies heavily on the unexpected image to chronicle the impossible journey through body, family, and history towards home. From the borderlands of madness to the unpredictable shape of peace, Inbetweenland bears unflinching witness to a rarely charted geography, offering the reader a resonant poetics of insurrection and grace.

Inbetweenland Jacks McNamara Books

I read about Jacks McNamara in the Oprah Magazine and my interest was piqued. The book did not disappoint. It is beautifully crafted in a somewhat chronological format so that if you start reading the poems at the beginning of the book and work your way through it you will get to know Jacks as a person, as well as a poet. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. There are some wonderful take-aways for those who like to learn about people.

Inbetweenland Jacks McNamara Books Reviews

Jacks McNamara's poetry bursts with the vivid painful energy of growth. The writing is searing, lyrical, closely observed, and finely wrought. The poet's ear is attuned to the flow of nature, the staccato of urban intensity, the shifting spaces between lovers and friends, and the vastness of the inner landscape; the poet's eye misses exactly nothing. It's been a long time since I encountered so fine a work by a young poet. I am delighted.
A decade ago I stumbled upon Dorothy Allison's book of poetry, the women who hate me and fell in love. I wanted to crawl inside of it. I wanted to read the poems out loud and hand the book to every woman I knew. Last week I opened up Jacks McNamara's book of poetry, Inbetweenland, and I felt that same rush of feelings. This book is powerful.

Every poem in this book hits hard and deep, but So Many Ways to be Beautiful is by far my favorite. Just a few days ago I found myself reading it to a friend at 2 a.m. It's one of those poems that makes everything okay. A poem that reminds you that you aren't the only one.

This book is a fierce collection of triumph and surrender, hot sex and queer identity, death and ultimately survival.
I do not read enough poetry to claim I am well-informed as to the distinctions between different styles. This collection often blazes, sometimes smolders, and is wonderfully rich in color, imagery, and raw emotion. I hate it when people label certain kinds of writing (often poetry) as "heavy", for that often suggests it is depressing. This book is not depressing, but it is fierce in its way; on the contrary it crackles and burns with such vivid intensity and spirit it nearly singes one's soul with its passion, and as such I found it both very compelling and often brilliant. Although the term is somewhat of a cliché, this seems like the writing of an "old soul" who has survived some complex and harrowing personal struggles and has managed to find a way through the dark. I especially liked some of the many creatively rendered references to nature; the writer has a sharp eye for the finer details of natural beauty. In addition, I think this is the voice of a genuine and impassioned activist. A poem entitled "Remyth Country" especially resonated, among others. The final section of the book, in particular, packs a real punch. I must also compliment whoever designed the book; it is both eye-catching as well as soul-stirring, and includes some very cool artwork. I strongly suggest that if you are one of those people who has an aversion to poetry you will put aside such reservations in this case. This is one "Inbetweenland" I'm glad I visited.
This is great writing by a person clearly aware of gender/queer/LBGTIQ perspectives and experiences!
